Insight
A month of daily steps as a chart with a draggable goal line, plus one chosen insight from your week that you can share.
Insight is the app's long view: a month of your daily steps as a chart, one observation about your recent week, and a goal line you can drag to see how a different target would have worked out.
Open it from Settings › Insight — "Your week, and the goal that fits."
The monthly chart
Each bar is a day. A horizontal line marks your daily goal, so which days cleared it is immediately visible. You can move between months, and the current month is where it opens.
Dragging the goal line
Drag the goal line and the whole report re-evaluates against the draft value as you move it: the bars, the stats, and the count of days you cleared. Release it and the value becomes your new goal, applied everywhere.
This is more reliable than guessing at a round number, because you are choosing against a month of your own days: you can see whether 9,000 would have meant reaching the goal four times or twenty. The line moves in the same 200-step increments as the slider, between 2,200 and 20,000.
The insight
Above the chart is one observation about your last seven days. There are seven kinds, and the app selects whichever is most notable:
| Insight | What it means |
|---|---|
| Milestone | A new all-time total since you started tracking |
| Personal best | Your highest single day, with how far back you had to look |
| Best week | Your biggest week, and how many weeks since the last one |
| Goal days | How many of the last seven days cleared your goal |
| Steadiest | Your most consistent week — no big days, no empty ones |
| Strongest weekday | Which day of the week is reliably yours |
| Peak hour | The hour you most often walk |
Rarity decides which one is shown. A personal best you have not beaten in over a year scores higher than one from last month.
The last three describe a pattern rather than a performance, so they are available whatever the week looked like. This means the card always has something to show: a quiet week gets "You're a morning walker" instead of a negative result.
Sharing
Insight renders as an image you can share. There is also a Messages extension: in a conversation, open the Steps app from the iMessage app row and tap Share Today's Steps to send your current count and goal as a card.
If the Messages extension says it has no data, open the main app once so it can record today's steps.
Does this replace the Health app?
No. The Health app holds the full history, every source, and every metric. Insight is narrower: it answers how your walking has been going recently and whether your goal is set at the right level.
Where does the data come from?
Apple Health, read on your device, same as everything else. Insight computes the report locally each time you open it — nothing is uploaded, and there is no server involved in choosing your insight. See Privacy and sync.
